ABOUT PETER RABBIT

The Easter bunny has its origin in pre-Christian fertility lore. The Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the Spring season.

The bunny as an Easter symbol seems to have it's origins in Germany, where it was first mentioned in German writings in the 1500s. The first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany during the early 1800s. And were made of pastry and sugar.

The Easter bunny was introduced to American folklore by the German settlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 1700s. The arrival of the "Oschter Haws" was considered "childhood's greatest pleasure" next to a visit from Christ-Kindel on Christmas Eve. The children believed that if they were good the "Oschter Haws" would lay a nest of colored eggs.

The children would build their nest in a secluded place in the home, the barn or the garden. Boys would use their caps and girls their bonnets to make the nests . The use of elaborate Easter baskets would come later as the tradition of the Easter bunny spread through out the country.

BUT WHO CALLED HIM PETER?

The Symbols Of Easter

by Pastor Charlie Schultz

Everyone is familiar with the meaning and significance of Easter. On that day, Christians from every nation and tribe on earth unite in an outburst of joy and exuberance. It is the zenith, the apogee, the utter pinnacle of the Christian year. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection from the dead of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Christians believe that as a gracious consequence of his resurrection, we, too, may anticipate our resurrection to eternal life.

The Church has spoken eloquently of Our Lord's resurrection. One way it has attempted to depict the significance of Easter is through the medium of visual symbols. Here are three of the more interesting symbols for Easter.

Butterfly THE BUTTERFLY It is patent why the butterfly has become one of the loveliest symbols of Easter. The beautiful form of the butterfly coming from the seemingly lifeless chrysalis could hardly fail to suggest itself as a parallel to Christ's release from the tomb. Furthermore, the individual Christian's victory over death and the grave is suggested as well. The larva suggests the lowly condition of man on earth. The chrysalis represents the body of man in the grave. And, of course, the butterfly signifies his glorified body destined for eternal life.

The Pheonix THE PHOENIX The Phoenix is a bird of legend. After living for four or five hundred years, it gathers a nest of sweet smelling twigs and spices. The nest is set on fire by the heat of the sun, and the phoenix is consumed, only to rise from the ashes -- recreated and young. Thus begins a new cycle of never-ending life. The parallel to both Our Lord's resurrection as well as our own is self-evident. From the ashes of death and destruction, we rise to newness of eternal life.

Easter Lilly THE EASTER LILY Easter lilies which make up such a large share of church decorations on Easter Sunday are perhaps the most traditional of all Easter symbols. All gardeners know that the bulb of the lily must first shrivel and become death-like in appearance. But after planting, it grows to blossom at Easter time in a display of white glory. The analogy is again obvious. From death comes life. From ugliness comes stunning beauty.
