Irish Ancestry: The Irish discovered America. Irish legends tell of the voyage of St. Brendan of Kerry to the New World in the seventh century AD. Other stories claim that a William Eris (or Ayers) from Galway accompanied Christopher Columbus on his famous voyage in 1492. Two Irishmen, Darbie Glavin and Dennis Carrell, were put ashore by English Captain John White in the year 1587. For some reason that has not been recorded, Captain White weighed anchor and abandoned these two men on the shore of what is now Virginia. The fate of these two Irishmen is unknown.
